Hitting the gym is almost always easier said than done. Whether it’s a hectic schedule or just plain lack of motivation, showing up to your local Gladstone Park gym seems like a battle in itself! But exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and should be a part of your routine. If you find yourself dreading the idea of going to the gym, here are some ways to motivate yourself and actually look forward to a sweat session!
1. Find a gym buddy
Having a friend (or a group of friends) can help you stay accountable. If you think about it, skipping your workout is a lot easier when you’re on your own. But when you have to bail out on a friend, it’s a different story. Also, you’ll have someone to motivate and cheer for you, too. It’s definitely a win-win!
2. Avoid setting hard rules for yourself
We know it sounds counterproductive but giving yourself a set of rules (“I need to lose this x amount of weight or else I can’t do it”) makes it easy for you to get discouraged. If you do have to set some rules for yourself, make sure they’re very small and realistic, such as putting in an hour of workout or working out at least three times a week. Once you achieve these goals, you’ll feel a sense of achievement, which will motivate you further.
3. Track your progress
If you’ve been going to the gym for months now but feel like you’re getting nowhere, you’re not alone. Chances are, you’re already making progress but it can be difficult to notice right away. This is where tracking comes in handy. Make an effort to track your progress daily (or weekly, whatever works for you), such as recording the days you worked out, new routines you’ve completed, or weight.
4. Reward yourself
For some people, exercising seems to be the reward in itself. But for some, exercise can feel like something you’re working hard for but without a clear reward. Give yourself a reward every time you finish your workout. It can be as simple as a massage or indulging in your favourite chocolate by the end of the week. You deserve it!
5. Go to a gym you like
Going to the gym is easier when you actually like the place. Make it a point to choose a gym that has great facilities and friendly staff.
